It was just a simple lie, but it had to be told. That’s the way things worked out. She loved James, but James loved Ann, so James and Ann were wed.

She was so crushed by her loss that she began to look for someone to fill the void. She met Robert, who very soon proposed: “Helen, will you be my wife? I love you so very much.”

“Of course I’ll be your wife,” she replied. And then the lie: “Because I love you too.”
