The Most Important Thing, by Don Tassone

WINNER, SIDERIUS CLASSIC FLASH FICTION AWARD, 2023
Tradition
They had a tradition in their family of striking children when they misbehaved. In time, the children fell in line, but their spirits were broken.

They had a tradition in their religion of only male leaders. Women served in lesser roles. Eventually, though, women abandoned the faith and led elsewhere.

They had a tradition in their country of gun rights. While most gun owners were responsible, some used their guns to kill people, even children.

Psyches were shattered, churches were diminished and lambs were slaughtered. But longstanding traditions were upheld, and that was the most important thing.

Your story is heroic, Don. It takes heroes to step aside and say look. That’s what you have done. Good for you.

Sometimes people have a distorted view of “discipline.” One that should be called abuse. Love, sometimes tough love, is a discipline that comes from within.
Thanks, Don, for pointing to the obvious.

A great story, Don, and if it causes even one person to re-think and stand against their 'traditions' perhaps it will gather momentum. Well done!

I had to reread this a few times, Don. It just strikes so true and is written so well.
Really hits home.

I really like how you bring it all together in the last paragraph, especially that first sentence. So simply put, and powerful

Sad reality. Will we as a society ever learn from our ‘traditional’ tragedies? Excellent story, Don.

    Stories

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.
Recently, we've welcomed a lot of newcomers and found that even two batches doesn't cover them all. Wherever that happens, we'll simply be publishing 'as and when' during the course of the day.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
