She had a broken wrist and ankle and a compound fracture of the left femur. The left thigh was bruised dark purple; I saw the bone pushing against the skin in a wicked V-shape. She’d need some metal to put that one together. They’d given her pain medication—she spoke in a sing-song voice.
The doctor asked about her medical history.
“Ever been pregnant?”
“Yes.”
“Have any children?”
“No.”
“Did you have an abortion?”
“No, I had the baby.”
The doctor looked confused, then he asked about insurance.
She said cheerfully, “I don’t have any.”
“No insurance?” The doctor looked stricken.
