I waited so long to think about what to say that when the ringing happened, I forgot the words. Listening to the dial tone seconds in, I heard the brimming chatter of unfamiliar voices, then finally our long ago conversations. I remembered the things we spoke of, lines complemented, completed, interrupted. Silence, like those moments when nothing was said, the late night phone calls near sleep, when only breathing was audible. I simply said goodbye, and the message faded, like all the other sounds, into the signal.
