The Witness, by Jennifer Lai

2/10/2020

Marcus peeked through the blinds. “She’s here.”

“Can’t you stay?” Emily pleaded.

“Wish I could, but I have to prep the witness.”

“I’m a witness, too. What if the killer finds me?”

“You’ll be in good hands. It’ll be over soon.”

Knock. Knock.

“Officer Calder, thanks for coming,” Marcus said.

“Don’t worry, Emily, I’ll stay here until your trial tomorrow.”

Later that night, Ding Dong.

“Yes?”

“Help, please! This way!” The boy at the door took off running.

After two minutes, the boy stopped.

“Why are we here?” Office Calder demanded.

“A guy gave me $50 to bring you here.”

Wow. Did I understand this? Someone got the officer away from the witness, so she would be hurt or killed and unable to testify?

I don't suppose it will help the witness, but there is sure to be an inquest into why the officer left his post... possibly even another court case.😊 Well done Jennifer.

Knock, knock...who's there. The harbinger of doom. Great story telling dialogue.
