Madeleine sunk into her favorite chair and sipped Earl Gray tea. With Thomas gone, the grandchildren grown, reading Christmas cards was better than Christmas morning. She sighed at the shrinking stack. Another fading tradition. She clutched the red envelope to her heart, printed with her sister’s return address. Last time they spoke they’d argued bitterly, ending their daily calls. When was that? August? She smiled. Joyful. She’d send Cecilia a card in the morning. Better yet, she’d call. Madeleine dropped the card. And began wailing. Her brother-in-law had written, “I thought you should know. Cecilia passed away in October.”

Life is too short to hold onto grudges...you pointed that out so well in your story.
