She was the first friendly face – the person who could see I was nervous and unsure of myself. She introduced herself and invited me to join her for lunch. We wandered round the shops eating our sandwiches and asking each other questions.
Five years later, I was her bridesmaid and two years after that, she was mine.
Twenty years on and I’m at her funeral. The irony isn’t lost on me.
