Wild Zinnia, by Jennifer Mills Kerr

25/2/2022

Heat against her back, Esther weeded her front garden. She spotted a young man, walking along the usually empty road. In his hand, a pink zinnia. She stood. He held up the flower. “I found it growing wild!”

Her son would have been his age. Still, Esther smiled. “Beautiful!”

He grinned, soon disappearing from sight.

David. She returned to weeding, murmuring his name, which soothed her even as tears slipped down her face and dropped into the earth.

Something very poignant about the zinnia. If it had been her son, he would have given it to her. All the moments they missed together.

Thank you for your comment. I love your phrase, "Missed Together" -- captures the feeling so well.

You captured the woman's thoughts and feelings quite well. You've shown how one person's pleasantry can become another person's pain.

Thank you for responding. Yes, small talk isn't always so small.

    "Classic"
    100-Word
    Stories

Since Friday Flash Fiction began in September 2013, 100-word stories have remained its 'beating heart'.

Normally, 100-word stories are scheduled for 07.00 BST (GMT in the winter) on the following Friday. However, where a large number of stories (more than 25) are due to be published on the same day, we publish a second batch around 10.30am.

Each week we pick a story or (occasionally) a poem as 'Editor's Choice'.
It's a personal favourite, no more. Do you agree?
